Make a Serene Cozy Bedroom with White Blackout Curtains

White Blackout Curtains for Bedroom

White blackout curtains are the epitome of tranquility as their calm is not just visual but also literal. Besides wrapping your space with ethereal serenity, they make the environs acoustically calm, visually dark and pleasantly cool/warm. They are the smart beauty-with-brain combo of ‘white’ and ‘blackout’ that can elevate any bedroom with effortless elegance and sleep-friendly ambiance. So, whether you have embraced rustic homespun charm or modern sophisticated suaveness in your bedroom, you can now rest easy as you neither have to sacrifice the bedroom-specific moodiness nor the quintessential ingredients of your decor style. But regardless of the aesthetic you are after, you will love our white blackout curtains for many more reasons, such as-

BRIGHT PALETTE, MOODY THEATRICALS: Fans of dramatic bedrooms often go over-the-top with the palette, but unless you love those gripping colors, chances are that they will wear out your interest too soon and sometimes feel too heavy for a bedroom. Quite contrary to that, white blackout curtains are effortlessly glamorous and dreamy, not desperate to impress; their allure is unpretentious, subtle and enduring, like that of marble, diamonds and the classic Akoya pearls.

But despite their light palette, white blackout curtains can create a cozy cavernous space by blocking incoming light. So, whether it is the fleeting city traffic lights or the blinding glare of daylight that stands in the way of your sleep, your curtains can ‘time-travel’ you to the cozy dark of a cave in the blink of an eye. If you have napping babies, night hustlers and light sleepers in your family, make their sleep wholesome and effortless by adding these efficient light blockers in your bedrooms and nurseries.

NO CLUTTER, NO NOISE, ONLY DEEP FULFILLING SLEEP: If your work day and family activities involve clamorous surroundings, tedious meetings and excessive eye-straining screen time, your bedroom needs to be visually soothing and acoustically calming, not engaging, so that your mind can finally rest and fall into slumber soon. White blackout curtains help you to foster calm, both aesthetically and literally.

The minimalist white makes the room visually clutter-free and the blackout properties of the curtains act as a shield against the din and tumult of busy streets, honking vehicles and loud neighborhoods. Their thick weave and robust textures help to absorb and muffle the sounds so that your white blackout curtains don’t only ‘look’ calming but ‘are’ calming.

COOL SUMMERY VIBES, NO NIGHT SWEATS OR SLEEP SHIVERS: White curtains are evocative of bright summers and clear skies, making the bedroom look bright and airy. They are cooling on the eye and can make your searing summer noons less hot. And since you take the blackout route, you have the additional help of its blackout properties in regulating the bedroom’s temperatures. Because, if light cannot peek in, so can’t heat.

And not just in the hotter months, this works in your favor round the year. In summer, you can expect the hot air to stay out and not mingle with the cool air that your HVAC supplies. And, in winter, the thermal heat will not be allowed to leak through the windows. So, you get cooler summers and warmer winters. Say no to rude awakenings from heat-induced night sweats and cold-induced sleep shivers – just sleep tight indifferent to the season’s challenges because your white blackout curtains are fighting the odds for you.

What is more? Your HVAC will thank you for reducing its burden and saving its batteries from draining out faster. And, you will also thank yourself for the great choice because energy savings means lower bills. For the eco-conscious, this is also a great step towards reducing greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere offering some respite amidst the global warming crisis.

SPOTLESS WHITE & ENHANCED AESTHETICS: Unlike ordinary white curtains, white blackouts don’t let their surreal beauty be adulterated by any external elements. As the blackout coating won’t allow light to penetrate, sunlight won’t ‘distort’ the color. A bright white set of drapes will never come across as cream or yellow. Besides, if you choose a white fabric with a pattern, you can expect the most honest presentation of its shapes and hues as bright sunlight from behind will not wash out the motif’s silhouettes or blur the pattern’s lines visually.

Further, since blackout curtains are heavier and crisper than non-blackouts, they are great for draping. They hold shape better so that your pleats can look stately and chic, even after long frequent use. They look fuller, not skimpy or sloppy, making it easier to create a sumptuous look and voluptuous pleats. All in all, they are spic and span, disarmingly charming and unparalleled gorgeousness.

OPEN SPACIOUS FEEL WITH SOLID FOOLPROOF PRIVACY: White is known for its light and airy appeal that makes the spaces it adorns feel very open and expansive. This is because light colors recede in visual perception, making them seem further away than they are, thus creating the illusion of a larger room. In a bedroom that is not blessed very much spatially, white blackout curtains do a wonderful job of reducing visual clutter and making the area feel more spacious.

However, in the case of blackout curtains, this sense of openness is not achieved by embracing transparent or lightweight fabrics that may compromise your precious bedroom privacy. Rather, it comes with an extra fortification that guarantees flawless privacy as the blackout properties do not permit even a shadow to be formed on their contours. Whether the lights are on or off in your bedroom, whether you are moving about or not even present, it will just appear the same on the external facade. Think of them as your trustful besties who know all your secrets and also how to keep them.

These are the top five reasons why clients fall for our white blackout curtains. And if you too are enamored by these smart, hardworking beauties, let us show you the three ways of making them yours at Spiffy Spools:

Flat panel drapes

BLACKOUT DRAPERY FABRIC: You can create your white blackout drapery with a white blackout fabric such as Casablanca from our collection. This fabric can block up to 98% of incoming light. If you want even more optimal results, you can fortify this drapery by adding blackout lining to your order.

DIMOUT DRAPERY FABRIC: Dimout fabrics are blackouts with a lower capacity for room-darkening. They block out almost 80% of incoming light and are ideal if you are only looking to turn off a substantial amount of light inflow and not for a cavernous ambiance.

DRAPERY LINING: The third option is to choose any white fabric from our collection and support it with a blackout lining at the back. Here, the drapery lining is endowed with blackout properties – instead of the face fabric – but this option throws the wide world of drapery fabrics open for you as you can now choose from velvet, silk, cotton, linen, and all types of blends.

Depending on the type of light blockage you are looking for, you can decide on the fabric and the lining. If you want the most optimal room-darkening, go for blackout fabric with blackout lining. And, if you are only looking for something more effective than a regular drapery, a dimout fabric from our collection will do.

But whether you’re looking for substantial or minimal room-darkening, getting the right fabric or lining is only half the job. The remaining half depends on several other factors that can be made favorable to the cause of room darkening using these tips –

LENGTH CONSIDERATIONS: If you have the best light-blocking fabric but stitch your curtains without optimal coverage, you’re leaving loopholes for light to peek in. So, always max on the length for foolproof results. Install the hardware at least 6-12 inches above the window frame and let the curtains reach down to the floor plugging any light leaks from the bottom. Or, go for floor-to-ceiling drapery and ensure seamless coverage. Let the curtains lightly touch the floor or ‘break-puddle’ for still better results. If you wish to learn about the standard practice regarding floor-length curtains, check out our blog on how to decide curtain length.

WIDTH & FULLNESS: Another aspect of sweeping coverage is the width of the drapery. Extend the pole at least 6-12 inches on both sides of the window so that light leaks from the side gaps are minimized. In addition, ensure maximum ‘fullness’ for creating robust pleats, making a dense insulative layer between the external and internal environment. For, this order curtains with 2.5x to 3x fullness, that is, 2.5 to 3 times the width of the window. If you wish to have more insight, please refer to our Drapery Measurement Guide. After ensuring such sumptuous coverage, also do your best to contain light leaks from the side gaps by using return rods or the tried-and-tested hook and eye method.

HEADING STYLE: The top portion of the curtain that hooks to the drapery pole is called the header and its design is called the heading style. If you choose a light-blocking fabric but fail to complement the curtains with a heading style that shares the same goal, you cannot expect optimal room-darkening, Pinch pleats, rod pockets, flat panels and pencil pleats are some styles that have light-blocking headers, whereas some others like tab tops, grommet tops and tie tops feature holes and loops that allow light to peek in. So, refer to our Heading Styles Guide and look for heading styles that block light, and choose one that goes with your decor style and the mood of your bedroom.

LINING MATTERS: Whether you choose a blackout or dimout face fabric, adding blackout lining behind a white fabric is highly recommended if you are looking for maximal results. This is because white inherently reflects light, making it less capable of itself to absorb light. So, if you expect your white blackout drapery to deliver the desired results, give it a blackout lining to compensate for the reflective palette.

FABIC COMPOSITION: If you are choosing a non-blackout face fabric, know that the effectiveness of the blackout lining will somewhat depend on the weave and composition of the face fabric as well. Go for tight-woven fabrics like velvet, medium to heavy-weight cotton, faux silk, or tight-knit linens to offer support to the blackout lining. Avoid sheers, lightweight cottons or loosely woven linens that will not be as insulative as tight-woven dense fabrics. The tighter and heavier, the better!
