Custom Striped Roman Shades & Window Blinds
For your Living Room, Bedroom, Kitchen & Beyond
If you’re looking for a pattern that is never ever going to disappear from the world of window treatments, one that breathes simplicity, accords speechless glam and blends effortlessly with any style, stripes are the way to go. From the elegant classic to the bold and playful, our striped roman shades come in varied colors and types and it’s the mastery of an imaginative designer that can make a striped shade evoke all the drama or relaxingly melt into the design to make this all-versatile pattern work best for your room.
A glad deviation from plains, stripes offer an understated elegance, but make no mistake, stripes can easily overpower. If not done right – your striped roman shades have all the possibilities of looking out of place and you may never want that to happen.
To ensure your stripes go in the right direction, our stylists at Spiffy Spools here break down the essence of this pattern and reveal all secrets of choosing your ideal striped window blinds. Read on for handy tips and inspiration:
VERTICAL VS. HORIZONTAL: The most important factor to consider while choosing your striped roman shades is deciding the direction of your stripes. The right stripe direction can fool the eye; a handy ‘up-and-down’ and ‘side-to-side’ detail awareness is all you need to pull off this optical trick!
– Vertical stripes: Vertical striped roman shades are ideal for low ceiling rooms. They draw your eyes up towards the ceiling giving an illusion of height, making windows look taller, thus elongating the overall appearance of the room. For an added optical appeal, we recommend outside-mounted roman shades above the window frame, so when you raise the shades, the stack sits well above the window.
– Horizontal stripes: Horizontal striped roman shades give just the opposite effect to vertical. Since they run parallel to the ground, they latch the vision on to the wall-to-wall breadth. With their ability to make the space look broader, they are a real salvation for narrow windows and cramped rooms, or even lanky walls and high ceilings.
SCALE YOUR STRIPES WISELY: It’s extremely important to get the proportion of your stripes right. A slight increase or decrease in the width of your stripes can make or break your room.
Stripes can go as wide as awning stripes to as narrow as pinstripes. Since bold patterns stand out while faint ones fuse into the design, the width of the stripes should depend on the size of the room as well as the window/door in question. Narrow, thin stripes can disappear in a large room and bold, large scale stripes can overwhelm a small one. Therefore, a small window often looks right clothed in a pinstripe, while a large window would benefit from a wide stripe.
If you’re mixing various stripes in a room, we recommend mixing scales instead of using the same scale throughout. Opt for a gentle mix of thin stripes and larger width – so to break monotony and create a lovely play of patterns.
CONSIDER COLOR & DEFINITION: Another important element intertwined with the scaling is the color scheme and the variations in the color saturation.
If you use gentle and neutral colors with nominal contrasts, say beige & white in ‘Trambone’, the wide stripes lose their overbearing appeal. A high contrast combo however – like the white & burnt orange of ‘Sunset’ – does not shed its drama and power as easily – despite being the exact same scale as Trambone.
Also consider the definition of the stripe when shopping. If you go for clean lines instead of smudgy finishes, the narrow stripes will get bolder definition. While abstract stripes – like those in our fabrics ‘For the Love of Blue’ and ‘Sea Holly’ – tone down the definition and optically temper down the width of the stripe.
PAIR WITH SOLIDS AND OTHER PATTERNS: Hands down, striped patterns are the most versatile and universal of all. They complement a variety of other patterns to effortlessly harmonize with other elements in your decor. Their neutral bearing and timeless character qualify them to tastefully blend with the masculine checks as well as feminine florals, traditional paisleys as well as modern abstracts. But if you want stripes on stripes, the compatibility is surprisingly equally strong. Regardless of which patterns you choose to mix, remember to use the scaling technique so that none swallows the other – two bold patterns in the same room will vie for attention. For example, pair the bold wide striped roman shades with ginghams, candy stripes or soft ditsies in the other elements.
